For the past two weeks Room 1 has been working on EPRO8 challenges. Last week we had to build the tallest structure we could using 10 newspapers and 5m of tape. The tallest was over 2m. This weeks challenge to build a bridge that spanned 66cm and then see which could hold the heaviest weight. Again we had 10 newspapers, 5 m of tape and 1m of string. The winning group's bridge held 17.5kg an awesome effort. We have had a busy week at school with swimming on Monday-Thursday and walking there and back to the pool on two days.
This week is Tongan Language week and we have been learning lots about the Friendly Isles. We finished our study on Vikings and our amazing artwork is up on the wall. We finished our art work for the fair which has hot air balloons which everyone drew. Last week we did our performance about the Taniwha of the Rakaia Gorge. Here is a link to the You tube clip of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSlCo-I76C4 We have had a busy start to the term with 3 way conferences, winter tournament, mufti day and Maths Week already completed. Currently we are busy practising our Maori Myth performance after spending time in the first 2 weeks making our props of cliffs and trees. Here we are painting the cliffs for our production. On Wednesday afternoon for Maths Week we went into family groups and did problem solving based on Maths picture books. This is the group that was in Room 1.
This has been a very busy week. The Allenton Choir performed at the Mid Canterbury Schools' Music Festival on Thursday night and they were great.
We have been doing lots of Wasgijs and finished a 500 piece one this week. We are now ready to start a 1000 piece one. Also we have been having fun doing lots of maths puzzles and descriptive writing about dragons. Our class story The War that Saved My Life is getting very interesting and we are learning a lot about life in England during WW2. This week we had our cross country at Argyle park. Everyone put in a big effort with special congratulations to Hunter, Lucas, Adam, Madeline, David and Ismeli who finished in the top 6 for their groups and have qualified for the County Cross Country. Also special congratulations to Oliver who was awarded the certificate for biggest effort in training. On Friday we had a Wacky House Colour Day to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. This was lots of fun and we all enjoyed dressing up.
We started the term doing some art, we drew Trees of Life. First we drew an outline in pencil and then we went over it in vivid. Next we coloured in tree with black or brown crayon or pastel. Finally we coloured the background with splotches of dye. We had to be careful to make sure the colours didn't run together. While Year 6 were on camp, the Year 5s were divided into 3 groups for an ANZAC DAY study. Here are some people with their yummy ANZAC biscuits. |
